Peoplewhoregularlydrankfourormorecansofanytypeofsodaadaywere30percentmorelikelytohavereceivedadiagnosisofdepressionthanpeoplewhodidnotdrinksoda,saidDr.HongleiChenoftheNationalInstitutesofHealth,wholedthestudy.Theriskofdepressionwasespeciallyhighforpeoplewhodrankdietsoda—a31percentincreasedriskcomparedtoa22percentincreasedriskforthosewhodrankregularsoda,theresearcherssaid.

Thosewhodrankfourormorecansofdietfruitdrinkswere51percentmorelikelytobediagnosedwithdepressioncomparedtothosewhodidnotdrinkdietfruitdrinks.

Bycontrast,peoplewhodrankfourormorecupsofcoffeeadaywere10percentlesslikelytohavebeendiagnosedwithdepressioncomparedtonon-coffeedrinkers.

Thestudyonlyfoundanassociation,anddidnotdetermine(确定)whetherdietsodaorfruitdrinkscauseddepression.Althoughtheresearcherstookintoaccountfactorsthatcouldaffecttheresults,suchasage,sex,education,smokingstatus,physicalactivity,bodymassindex(BMI)andenergyintake,it’spossibleothercircumstances,suchasafamilyhistoryofdepressionorstressfullifeevents,couldexplaintheassociation.
